    verizon fios questions

    I have two questions first I have had a wirless internet with verizon will I see a difference in speed with fios? The wirless seems slow at times.

    I am having them connect fios to my laptop. Will I able to move around the house or will I have to be conneceted to one spot?

    They say fios is faster, but that's debatable. There are many factors that come in to play with wirless, so it seeming slow could mean a whole bunch of things.

    If you're using wireless with your laptop, then you can go anywhere. If you plan on being plugged in to the modem then obviously that matters on the length of the cable.

    It suppose to be faster, but then it also depends on your wireless card, your signal, and how busy of a channel you're on.

    WIFI transfer speed > FIOS bandwidth. The only time youll run into a FIOS bandwidth > WIFI transfer speed is with 80.11b standard routers. As for the wired vs. wifi performance debate there are way to many factors that effect the performance of WIFI to really compare to the 1 slowing factor for copper Ethernet transfer speeds. The reason you see speed decrease with wireless is mostly due to range + interference + building materials the signal must travel through to reach its destination. No matter what 802.11 standard you use you will never reach the performance of good old fashioned orange/white Orange, green/white blue, blue/white green, brown/white brown....at least with current technology.

    When they install FIOS you will get an ActionTec wireless router. So your connection to the internet will be a 11g speeds on wireless. So you will not be using all of your available bandwidth with only wireless. Do all of your setup with a wire/lan connection. Make sure you learn how to setup the wireless and security, most are def on NO Security.

    FIOS is faster than the Comcast service I use to have even though the down speed was slower 5mbps vs 6mbps. The uplink speed was a huge jump 764k to 2 mbps. The lag is less than cable, too.

    IEEE 802.11g is 54Mbps FIOS has not reached anywhere near that type of bandwidth. Now if said router uses "b" then yeah even in a perfect situation your not going to see full FIOS bandwidth.

    FIOS has a 25mbps service that will pretty much fill the usable 11g bandwidth. But yes in most cases 11b is enough for most.

    I like the pricing on that stuff too. Kicks Comcast in the nuts if you don't have TV service...
