Using a dell XPS 1330m (w Intel Proset wireless adapter), Linksys wrt 160n:

When I'm wired I get great speeds near 20Mbs. When I go wireless the speeds go back and forth between 2 Mbps and 18 Mbps, about 60% of the time below 6 Mbps. My gf's mac gets a constant wireless signal above 10Mbps which suggests that the wireless signal from the wireless router is ok. Thus, I'm led to believe that there is something up with my laptop's wireless adapter. But I'm lost as to what could be the issue. I've made sure that the power options maximize power performance to the wireless adapter. Also, this occurs even when I'm 3 feet from from the wireless router. Any ideas?

Check the power management on your card, it may be varying the strength based on need.

Normally, I would say run inSSIDer to check signal strength, but in your case, it's pretty much assured it's your laptop, which means most likely power management.

Try downloading a file and see if it ramps up during the download, then drops when finished.
