My v505-bc w/ LAN Expresss IEEE 802.11 (used to have pro/100 somewhere in the name) was connecting to my even-now perfectly-functioning wireless network until yesterday. At that time, I downloaded Windows XP service pack 2. Since then, instead of connecting, I get something like "waiting for a response from the wireless network," and then it fails to connect. Choosing "repair" only yielded an answer like: "could not repair because failed to connect" I turned all firewalls off and made the network an open, unencrypted one without a network key to make troubleshooting easier. Still didn't work. My other (new) computer connects just fine from over four times the distance (this one is now three feet away, but I've tried multiple distances just in case).

SO, I went to the "downloads" section of the SONY website, and got two updates:

    SO-Z00010803HR04US.EXE and AM-930600802DG04US.EXE

One's an update for firewall compatability with SP, and the other is the LAN adapter driver update.

After installing the latter, one thing changed: a new error message. Now, even though my network shows up with full green bars indicating the signal strength, and shows up every time I "view available wireless network messages," the system waits while giving me a "detecting wireless network" message and then fails with a "unable to connect.... The network may no longer be in range" message -- but it is definitely NOT a signal strength issue -- the network is fine, and appears again in full strength.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas what I should do? Pleaes email me @ [email protected] with a copy of any replied -- thanks in advance!

I have a virtually identical problem with a Dell 5150 using TrendNet TEW-421PC Wireless card with Dell Truemobile 2300 wireless router. Before SP2 I had the wireless link working fine for internet access and partly working for LAN access. Now nothing works and as of today it got even worse: XP crashes hard when wireless card installed with hardwired access still connected. Blue screen of death even with normal broadband adapter disabled.

    All clues welcome.

Sadly wireless problems are shockingly common around here after the install of SP2. I've seen it reported several times. Anyway, it seems like the only surefire fix is a system restore if your manufacturer hasn't posted their own resolution.
