Thinking of upgrading my cable speed from 3mbps to 5 or 8 (63 a month for 8 versus 33 a month for 3mbp) is it worth it? What will this help? I do ok right now I guess but I do like to download and stream some and I download my games also (direct2drive, steam)

Also thinking of getting Wireless N hardware for my network will it make a big difference and how so?

If the money is not the problem, sure take it, as ^^^ he said. Downloading games will go much faster.
The N network won't make any difference, even though I did not understand your question quite.

No...I'd stick with the 3mbps you have.

The only difference it will make is in downloading, and then only if the server on the other side is capable of delivering the files you want. Data communications rely on both the sender and receiver.

With rare exceptions, few servers will give you a sustained download speed greater than 3mbps.

As for games and streaming video content, most games are streaming video are designed for use on much slower networks and the increased bandwidth will result in no increase whatsoever (maybe less buffering)

You only mentioned download speed, and not upload speed. About the only thing the higher download speeds will offer if you are also getting higher upload speeds is better video conferencing.

Before someone jumps all over me--please note I said MOST downloads. There will be exceptions, but typically drop down below the 3mbps. I've seen other servers do it to, but I rarely see those kinds of speeds as a rule.

For the $30 extra per month, I think you are throwing your money away right now...maybe that changes in the future, but I think you're disappointed today.

$5 maybe $10 per month, but not $30
