i just moved into my dorm a few days ago when i plugged in my ethernet cable it wont let me access any internet sites. there is an unknown network connected to my laptop with the one that should connect me to the internet and i think that is what is preventing my from connecting to the internet. so far ive tried shutting down my laptop restarting it taking out the battery disabling and enabling the connection and even went as far as opening up a hundred browsers at the same time(i thought itd overload the connection and kick it off). anyways does anyone have any ideas as to what i should do or what the problem might be. please any advice what so ever will be helpful

thanks in advance for you help

Huh...i'm lost; what do u mean when u say "there is an unknown network connected to my laptop". Is this .Vista or something?

And is it saying that amongst the network icon in the task tray when u connect the ethernet cable to the laptop?

Universities/Colleges usually require the students to log into the school network or do some kind of VPN set up before allowing you to access the internet through the school network for security purpose. I would suggest that you ask the people down at the computer center to give you a hand on setting that up, or ask a room/dorm mate.

Basically when Vista can't get a authenticated on the network it just shows up as unknown... Have you tried connecting with different browsers?

More to the point, have you read the literature the school gave you about how to connect to the network and/or have you gone to speak to the school's IT department? You will almost assuredly get a better answer from them than from us here on NBR.

ok yes im working from vista.
no there isnt anything about signing in first otherwise thered only be one network and when i open my browser it should take me to the place that i need to sign in at
ive been to the it people and all they told me to do was to disable and then enable my connection which ive done multiple times with no success.
and finally this unknown network appears along with the college network

You may want to make sure your FW is disabled or find out what subnet you need to allow for the connection to happen.

Take a screenshot of the window that shows you the "unknown network" and then post that screenshot to the thread, also, right-click on this "unknown network" (if that's possible), and click on the "properties" menu item if one comes up, then post the contents of the main properties window of this network along with the screenshot.
