hey all, I just got my laptop and am getting speeds just under 1MB. Is this normal? I checked the speed on my desktops and they are in the 2-4+MB range but they are wired. btw my laptop is an acer5672 and I am with comcast cable in WA.

What do you mean by wireless speeds?

Are you just asking about the speed in Mbps shown when you mouse over the system tray icon?

I'm asking about Mbps. I know my system tray Mbps is only theoretical maximums. I ran the test on bandwidthplace.com and am getting just under 1Mbps on my wireless laptops and getting over 3Mps on my wired desktops.

ok your asking for broadband speeds which is provided by your isp. That is a pretty good speed for comcast. The number you see in your tray is your baseband or LAN speed. The reason your lappy number is lower is that wifi doesnt transfer as high. My wired preformance comes in at 1.5mbps and wifi is 768kbps ish. The number in your tray is the speed you can transfer data over your LAN (local area network), and can affect the speed of your internet. FOr instance a bad wifi connection can lower broadband bandwidth, due to weak LAN connectivity.

The bandwidthplace.com test gave me a 1.4 Mbps on my wireless laptop connection so I guess that's decent, yes?

Meh, I'm getting 2.1 Mbps now... the fluctuations :O

if your wifi speed is about half of your wired speed, that's pretty good.

guys, I asked this question in the gaming forum. Is there a way to disable WEP on the router and enable MAC addresses while still maintaining good security? I read that the encryption is what slows down my wireless connection. Not noticeable when doing things like surfing the web but definitely noticeable when playing an online game.

    I'm using a D-Link wireless router (DI-524).
How do I check what channel it's set at?
My signal strength is at 5 bars and it shows 54mbps in the tray.

update: I upgraded my ram from 1gb to 2gb (slightly faster ram too). No more lag issues so far. Not sure how that fixed it, but, so far, it's fixed!

yes you can always disable encryption, but no your security will go down the pooper. I would recomend using wpa as it is alot more secure then wep and is alot easier to enter as it is just a normal password. As well as mac filtering and youll be pretty safe. But I do not recomend disabling encrption at all. It wont help you with speed but will open you up to alot of nasty things.
