Hi everyone, I could use some help with transferring files from an old Dell to a new Gateway laptop I just bought. I was able to setup a network between my old laptop (Windows XP) and the new laptop (Windows 7). I have a Belkin router, and the old laptop has a Netgear wireless card. I'm running into a problem where I can't cut/paste files and folders from old to new. Even if I try to enable file/print sharing, it says I don't have permission once I try to do it. I can see the folders I've shared just fine, but I can't actually do anything with them. On the old Dell, it's setup that my wife is the admin, and even when I logged in as her, clicked "enable file and print sharing" as well as making sure the read-only checkbox wasn't marked, it still wouldn't allow it.

I also tried the other method of installing Windows Easy Transfer on both PCs. I can get them to connect, but then I lose the Wifi connection almost right away, and have to unplug the router and plug it back in 10 seconds later.

Any ideas? I'd rather not buy a crossover cable or transfer everything using a thumb drive!

Try using wire connection on both pc's. Sometime wireless is flakey and you have the number 1 router in flakey, Belkin.

If you cannot pull, can you push? Create a file share on the other machine and move (push) files to it, rather than trying to "pull" files from it.

Windows XP can be somewhat flakey when dealing with Windows 7.

Also, for XP, is SIMPLE FILE SHARING on?

Actually, somehow I got this to work with the folders I needed...I think Windows may have automatically downloaded some updates, and maybe that helped. Thanks!

Also, completely off-topic but what do the padlock icons mean above the keyboard? One is a padlock symbol with an "a" inside of it, and I can't remember what the other one is since my laptop is at home right now.

Brilliant! Also, having upgraded from XP to Windows 7, I have to say that Windows 7 is awesome. So many cool features.
