all i need is to set up a wired connection between my laptop which has vista and my desktop having xp installed.
i've bought cross cable. i can't share files and folders. even after i assign different ip's and enabling the network discovery, file sharing etc in vista, it still remains a failure.
will any kind soul here help/guide me through the process?
ICS is also what i need, but priority is file and folder sharing :(

Need more details. Are you getting an error like "No network provider...." or "access denied" or "not found..." or are you presented with a credential dialog box to authenticate?

To make sure they can see each other have you gone to DOS (cmd prompt) and tried to ping the opposing client? A Ping will tell you they can see each other. Are you mapping with \\clientname\share or \\ipaddress\share ?

Do the computers see each other at all in Network/My Network Places?

They need to have the same workgroup I believe.

    the ping goes successful.
even have the same WORKGROUP as WORKGROUP.
but both pc's can't see each other in network places.

i tried my laptop (vista) at my cousin's pc, having xp as well. what happened was, his desktop pc assigned an AUTOMATIVE IP address. and then when i checked on my vista's network>WORKGROUP, i could access his files and folder. now i don't know how it worked, my lan doesn't assign any ip automatically.

Autoconfig IP starts with a 169.... Its not a "real" address.

Seeing in the network neighborhood is not an absolute necessity. Have you tried with \\IP\share name ?

^^ thank you so much bud. here's the update now
i assigned 192.168.15.1 to my desktop xp and 192.168.15.2 to my laptop vista.
i could ping my laptop and using \\IP\share name, could share files as well.
but through vista, i couldn't ping and share files to my xp. any solution? because actually i wanted to get files FROM my desktop TO my notebook.

Im sure your aware but sharing is bi-directional, you can push or pull files to/from a share. You havent answered the one question I need to know to help. Is there an error, if so what is it? Or.. do you get a credential dialog box and can't authenticate?

XP has this registry entry value called forceguest and is by default set to 1. So.. no matter what you do you can't auth. to the share. That reg needs to be set to 0. Its at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

forceguest is a DWORD value that needs to be 0 to authenticate to an XP share. If both machines have the same account... e.g. same user/password combo you can use that to use pass through (integrated) authentication to not have to type in a username/pass once forceguest is set to 0.
