I have a friend with a strange wireless problem. He has a thinkpad x31 and is connected to a simple netgear wireless b router at work using only 128bit wep encryption. his laptop is only about 8 feet away from the router, but he has very low signal quality. the arthos utility shows signal strength at 100%, but quality around 15%. this makes the wireless barely usable, and a lot of stuff times out or is very slow.

other people connected to that router have no problems at all.
could this be a dying internal network card or a problem with the antenna connectors on the card?
He reports no connection problems with other routers he connects to at home and other places.

    any ideas?

Could b both, or he might just need to update the drivers for the Atheros card.

^ I think the fact that he can connect to other routers just fine rules out a hardware problem with the wireless card. You might want to try updating the router firmware.
