You need to provide more information: each computer's OS, your router, your wireless/NIC cards, steps you took to set up a workgroup, etc.

    old computer:
    XP home
linksys router (dont remember the model number off the top of my head, but i know its a B router (not one of the new G ones)
    linksys ethernet card

    laptop:
    XP Media
    intel wireless card

and i have no clue if the hard drivers are NTSC or FAT32. i would assume NTSC though. also, i used the steps in both the small workgroup guide, and the wireless workgroup guide

If your desktop wired connection isn't working, that would explain why your laptop can't see it. Just because a workgroup shows up on the desktop, it doesn't mean you have any connection. Your laptop should show up in the workgroup. If it doesn't, you aren't connecting.

Look at your router. Whatever port is used by the desktop should be illuminated or blinking. If it isn't, there's no connection from the router to the desktop.

Next, check your desktop's device manager and look at the NIC. If there's an exclamation or question mark next to it, there's a driver problem. Try installing the correct drivers. If the drivers don't fix the problem, your NIC may be bad and may have to be replaced.

Be specific - what computer has the wired connection problem? The desktop? The laptop? Both?
