your running a plug from your desktop to your laptop?

or the ethernet plug that was originally plugged into your desktop is now in your laptop?

lol you cant do that without setting your desktop as an internet sharing machine and without messing with a lot of configurations, which in the end dont work. Simple advice, buy a router.

so you need to run ICS to connect to the net?

well from experience that is a pain in the rear end and you really should get a router, they're quite cheap these days

vista also has some connection issues that will frustrate you more

Even with ICS you will need a crossover cable. The network cable that you currently have is no doubt a passthrough.
But like everyone else... buy a router. They are almost as cheap as the crossover cable.
