Hi............I just got my acer 5920 and installed xp no prob, i was on my laptop when i check the connections and it shows other in your area using wireless. All were marked secure except my Belkin router, so me thinking i could secure it no prob went to my main pc looked up my router settings went into wireless and changed it to what i thought was secure then my laptop wouldn't pick up the signal.
My internet connections on my descktop is showing wireless connected but on my laptop connections is showing not connected, should i be installing some sort of belkin software on my laptop or any advice appreciated or should i be changing something on my laptop so it can recieve the signal.

    thanks

had wirelss once before and ended up getting a cable but it seemed so strong and steady before i changed a few things

I had a similar problem with my Belkin router and a Toshiba laptop. It would not detect the router and that made it so I could not connect to the internet after i set the security on the router.

What i did was went into the Device Manager (Windows XP). I uninstalled the wireless card and restarted the computer. When the computer turned back on it automatically reinstalled the drivers and was working again. It connected to the router and has been working since. Just a suggestion :)

    Still trying...the security setting are
    security mode---WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK)
    Authentication---WPA-PSK
    Encryption Technique--TKIP
    Pass Pharse-......................

I tried that idea Genius....no luck...

As i said it was working i made it what i thought was secure
then it just stopped. I'm norm good with pcs but only had
wireless once before for a short time so i guess i'm new.

    Thanks

Did you also configure your wireless card with the same security info you used to configure the router? For example, if you set up encryption, e.g., WPA, did you also put the security key for WPA into the wireless card?

association---this network requires a key for the following-
    network authentication---WPA2-PSK
    data encryption--TKIP

is this the setting your talking about

Yes. When you set up the encryption in the router, you had to create or generate a security key. Hopefully you wrote that key down (if memory serves, it's generally 64 characters long), in which case you need to provide that same security key number to the network connection properties on your laptop for your Belkin router before the laptop will be able to connect to the wireless network.

Also, just FYI, this encryption doesn't apply to a wired connection, such as you have with your desktop, which is why enabling encryption on the router did not affect the wired desktop.

On my router setting on my desktop the Wireless Bridge is-Diasbled
    is this ok ?

Man o man..............all i did was try and secure it now i'm here for
    hrs trying to fix it.

I would say that is just the way the software deals with the UI, I don't think is saying that you haven't entered 19 letters.

Now, can you provide more details about your configuration? Are you saying that you have a router in your desktop and your laptop access the network/internet through your desktop?

BTW, Belkin is a very weak router, many people have problems with them.

WEP is the basic mechanism to transmit your data securely over the wireless network. Matching
encryption keys must be setup on your device and wireless client devices to use WEP. More Info

Yes. You need to configure your connection to this particular network on your laptop as well as on the router itself.

Once the settings have been entered into the configuration for connecting to that particular network, and you clicked the "Ok" button at the bottom of the dialogue window, that should have saved the settings on the laptop. One other item to double-check to make sure that the laptop will automatically connect to this network in future is to right-mouse click on the icon for your wireless adapter in the "Network connections" window, go to "properties" on the pop-up context menu, which should bring up a dialogue window that lists the configured wireless networks in a field at the bottom. There, highlight your network and make sure that it's set to automatically connect whenever the network is detected.

You could also change WEP to WPA, which is safer.

Very true; however, it might be best to wait and see if this change takes and at least resolves the connectivity issue before we start making the OP's head spin by adding on additional customizations. :D :D

    @the OP:

Wirelessman is, of course, correct. Once you're sure that your system is connecting and otherwise behaving itself, you should review the information contained in the router's documentation on WPA, make sure you understand how to set it up before you start changing router settings (it's not that difficult, but best not to change things unless you know what the change is supposed to do), and then switch over to WPA instead of WEP - WEP is basically the functional equivalent of locking your screen-door; it'll stop the body of the door from turning on it's hinges, but it won't stop a burglar from simply pushing out the screen and reaching in to unlock the door.

LOL Shyster that's the best explanation of WEP I have ever heard.
