replacing my intel wireless with a N card

hihi - ive got a lenovo laptop 3000 N100....here is the manual for it

it has a "Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG Mini-PCI Express Adapter"......i want to replace it with INTEL WIRELESS 4965AGN 802.11N 300MBPS MINI PCI-E CARD can some clever guy tell me if it is as simple as plug n play or do settings in bios need changing...the reason i want to change it is because i have N1 belkin wireless router so i want to boost the performance of my laptop..ta

 

Remember the i4965 is only 300Mbps at 5.8Ghz, you will only get 130Mbps at 2.4Ghz which is still better than the i3945's 54Mbps of course.

I've done a speedtest of various cards (a few posts) down
Also a how to install, down further as well.
It's quite a simple task.

 

thanks mate....at least it will bw better then 54mbps, i noticed that the card im going to buy has 3 antennas, wheras mine only has two....would i need to take the laptop apart to install the 3rd antenna or will two be ok ?...cheers

 

It will work with 2, (don't connect the middle connector on the i4955)
You may loose a little range.

As in my how to install the extra antenna, it's fairly easy to add the 3rd antenna.

hi i bought THIS to put in my lenovo laptop 3000 n100, ive installed the drivers and software from the link in the seleers description. In device manager it shows up , but there is a yellow exclamation mark by it and it wont start....i have tried many time to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but it wont start up...see image attached.....i thought this was compitible with my laptop, i even asked the seller if it would work..he said most definately....any ideas why it will not work...drivers are installed fine....i want to make use of the N draft on my belkin n1 wireless router...ta for any help and advice..

 

Try downloading and installing this driver...

it's on the dell website, but the driver should work for all of the same wireless cards

 

Did you initially install Intel's drivers? If not, jump into safe mode and refresh your drivers with the latest Intel version.

Those are the drivers that are officially supported. It sounds that either you are having hardware compatibility issues or the drivers did not install correctly.

 

damm....i dont know what else to do..i bought it from this guy here on ebay , they are suppose to work on my lenovo 3000 n100....but dont....any further help or assistance....will lenovo be able to help if i phone them..regards

Check the Lenovo site for a 4965 flavor. If they do not have a driver set for your specific laptop/os, trying finding the closest model with a set. I have no experience with Lenovo support, so I cannot comment on if they will help or not.

 

FWIW, last time I had to call Lenovo with a problem, I got a rep that was in America and spoke English.

 

A yellow exclamation means there's a problem with the adapter itself or the drivers you're using - you can re-install the same drivers until hell freezes, or the poles refreeze and it won't matter.

The adapter you're using is not a Lenovo supplied part - it's an Intel OEM part, and as such the Lenovo drivers aren't going to work with it.

Components that are shipped with any system have been specifically designed to work with that system - consequently, so have the drivers. When you buy an OEM part directly from the Manufacturer (Intel) then you need to use the drivers from that manufacturer. If you had bought a replacement part designed for Lenovo systems direct from Lenovo, and having a Lenovo part #, then you'd use the driver from their site for that part.

Intel, like most suppliers, stipulate prior to downloading one of their Generic drivers that they recommend installing OEM (in their case when they talk about OEM they're referring to 3rd party vendors like Lenovo, HP, etc., since they design around Intel products and not the other way around) drivers for their components that were originally purchased installed as part of a system configuration. In other words, if you've got a Lenovo with an Intel card, then use a Lenovo certified driver for it; if you've got a Lenovo without an Intel card, but purchased a Lenovo replacement that will fit, then you'd use the Lenovo driver again. But if you have a Lenovo system without an Intel card, and you purchase one from somewhere like say, Ebay, that isn't a Lenovo replacement part but an original Intel card, then you use the Intel driver.

Using generic drivers downloaded from OEM sites and installing them for use on 3rd party vendor systems is one of the the biggest causes of system problems seen on a regular basis. Most users can't distinguish or understand that an OEM generic driver is different from a certified driver from the system manufacturer.

thanks mate..the link you posted is for a vista op system...im using windows xp hone edition..ive tried these drivers from intel already, but they dont work....my lenovo had an a 54g intel card which im replacing with this card...so what you saying is this card is not a original intel card..and wont work with the intel drivers from the intel site..if so ill get back to the seller and ask for my money back..ta
