You want to connect to the desktop using the laptop, and use it (the desktop) as if you were sitting right behind it?

Windows built-in application 'Remote Desktop' does this. Which can be found under 'All Programs' --> 'Accessories'. You enter either the desktop pc 'name' or its 'IP Address'.

Remote Desktop is only supported by Win7 Pro and Ultimate (and Business?).

You can try the various VNC programs. I like TightVNC a lot when I'm managing my server that I don't have physical access to.

Well, for one we don't know what OS the OP is running.

Nevertheless here are the facts about RD!

OP, if RD isn't supported on the desktop machine, another option is TeamViewer.

Oh, right. Confused things there for a second.

What I meant to say is that any Win7 machine can accept remote desktop connections, but only Pro/Ultimate/(business?) can make them.

Ifyou have Pro or Ultimate on your laptop, you're good to go. If not, try TightVNC, or as suggested, Teamviewer.
