Just a little update on my router troubles.
I had a 5-6 year old D-Link and couldn't get anything but an open network.

I got a D-Link DIR 655. It's $70.00 with tax at Costco here and it was worth every dime and more. The same router at Best Buy is $149.00.
Not only did I get it connected by myself, but I know have a secure network and my connection speed is so much faster.

thanks to all that helped me understand routers, and made suggestions. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=338505

I heard nothing but great things about this router but unfortunately, I cannot give it any praise now that I own it. My Netgear WNDR3300 was way better and faster.

Did you have D-Link wifi cards in your computers, or did you mix and match (Netgear wifi cards with D-Link router, etc)? Did you follow established procedures to get 300Mbps? Can you define "way better and faster"?

I'm using the Intel wifi card in my laptop. My signal is always weak when I'm upstairs and my pages don't load instantly like they did with my Netgear WNDR3300.

How is it with a G wireless connection? I am about to dump my Linksys wrt54g. I think I fix it but who knows! The case was lose so I took the case off and then put it back on. It is nice and tight now. I am so sick of dropping wireless.

If it still disconnects I am going to replace it and the D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router seems to have 5 stars from everyone that brought it off Amazon.

My wife's laptop and my Netflix Roku player are 802.11g, and neither have weak connections or speed problems. Rock solid connections every time. If you are upgrading, you might consider upgrading your wifi card as well so you can take advantage of 802.11n.

I saw a D-Link express N card for like $55 or a USB Linksys one but, not sure how that would work. Does it disable my on board wifi card?

Congrats! Thats a great price. At that price I would have gone for it too, unfortunately there is no Costco where I live. I have heard a lot of people say good things about it.

I thought your router was working better when you downgraded to Tomato 1.22? What happened? :(

No, neither will disable the on-board NIC. You'll have to either disable it in the device manager or disable it in the BIOS. I recommend getting the D-Link card if you decide to get the DIR-655.

I am having less disconnections but still have them but not as much. When I do however it really a pain getting it back up and running. I was thinking why not look into a new router. I never had a new one. The two I had were hand me downs. I had a Linksys vonage voip one but, it got during a major rain stop fried the phone ports.

That is how I got my WRT54G a friend gave me it after my vonage Linksys started having issues. I keep all on a APC so I am not sure how it damge the phone ports. This WRT54G works great just wifi issues.

My D-Link DIR-655 router is the best router I've owned so far. Good reception, speed, and lots of features.
