    Hello guys.
I know there are a lot of 3rd party softwares that you can use in the linksys wrt54gs. I have a router at 2 story home and all I need is to increase the wireless range and speed. can some one recommend which 3rd party software to do this. I did try the dd-wrt software, and it does show there are a lot more function for the router but the range seem to be the same as the manufacture software
    Please advise
    Thank you

The best thing to boost the distance is the use of High gain antennas. If you only have the short 2dBi, upgrade to the 5-7dBi ones.

If I recall the Linksys in the new housing only have 2dbi. High gains have a length of ~6-8" long. Where low gains are 3-4".

Depending on what your notebook has, some work better than others. Make sure your NB is set to max power. Most all power managements software drop the power back to conserve battery.

Depending on your house construction you may need to change the location of your router. This is the reason I like seperate AP's. You are able to move them easily to find a optimum location.

Try a PCMCI card if you have one.

Try running netstumbler and survey your area. Also consider positioning your antennas 90deg (horz) vs vertical. This will change the field to up and down vs horz.

If you're looking specifically at 3rd party software for the Linky, try DD-WRT. I've been using it for almost 2 years on my WRT54G with good success. I was having a bad time with the Linksys software and was ready to trash the router before trying this software. One of the features that might help you is that you can boost the transmit power of the router ever so slightly to improve coverage in your house. I can now get a good signal from my basement all the way up to my 3rd floor; before the signal was weak or non-existant. The site for the download is www.dd-wrt.com.

    Good luck!

try: blank/admin. If this does not work reset your router for 30 sec, and try again
