Quick backstory, I have just gotten a new e1705 from dell. wireless works great, but I like using my regular wired cable modem connection when I am at mys desk as downloads move much faster.

Prior to getting the dell, I was using a loner laptop from work, an IBM thinkpad R series. Initially wiht that laptop I was getting the "limited connectivity/can't aquire network address" error when plugged into the wired connection. A quick phone call to my service provider, they reset the modem, presto! worked no problem.

So, when I got my new dell, same problem, I thought, I'll just have them reset the modem again and off I go. However, after having the ISP reset it, I no longer get the "limited connectivity" error, it is showing as connected correctly, but nothing loads in my web browers. I've turned windows firewall off and it doesn't change anything. I've disabled the wireless connections and nothing changes.

I'm at a real loss, it appears to be configured correctly and is displayed as "working" but it is not. Perhaps a driver issue? I did a clean install of XP but I'm pretty sure I reinstalled the correct LAN drivers.

any help is appreciated, or a point in the right direction, I couldn't find a thread with the same problem. thanks guys. :)

Do you have a router between the computer and the cable modem?

What cable modem do you have? What are your network settings for your local area connection? If you don't have a router, and if your modem doesn't assign a network address, have you supplied the required information?

Are you using DHCP or Static ???
Check the port status for proper IP and DNS data.

If you can ping a IP and NOT by Site Name, the DNS server data is not correct or down.

So, I don't know what the deal is. I've run IPCONFIG/ALL, RENEW, etc and I got this info

    Physical Address: 00-14-22-F3-5C-34
    IP Address: 66.108.86.22
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.240.0
    Default Gateway: 66.108.80.1
    DNS Servers: 24.29.103.10, 24.29.103.11
    WINS Server:

I then tired manually inputing the values into the TCP/IP properties but it still isn't working.

COuld it be the drivers? I have two connections a 1394 net adapter one and Broadcom 440 one. Do i need both, or are they possibly conflicting?

Still haven't figured it out, as far as I can tell I'm connected, I have an IP set by DHCP but I can't browse the internet, transfer files over the internet, etc.

clueless. I've tried the cable provider's tech support but they are not so great.

i would try to turn the cable modem off and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. also try to do a clear DNS cache in your laptop before hooking the devices back together.

    cheers ...

Ok i'll give that a try thanks. At the risk of sounding dumb (wouldn't be the first time ;) ) how does one clear the DNS cache?
