Recently, my wifi has started becoming inconsistent.

While browsing, many times my connection will time out, like when I visit web pages or stream videos.

When performing the speakeasy.net speed test, sometimes the download speed progress bar will stop, then speed up again, then stop, and so on. I am not able to determine the source of the problem. I have not made any changes to my computer lately, so could it possibly be a virus?

I tested the wifi on several other computers and they do not experience any issues. I'm running windows 7 64-bit on my sager NP 8662. Strangely enough, when I boot my laptop into windows vista partition, the speed test runs smoothly and I have no issues browsing. This indicates to me that the problem probably does not lie in the hardware and that is why I suspect a virus in my windows 7 partition.

bump, still running into this problem, it has severely weakened my ability to web-browse.

I notice that if I run the intel manual diganostics tool, the ping to the default gateway tends to fail to respond every so often.

Along the line of newsposter, just log into your router and change the WiFi channel that's being used. See if that effects anything.

As I and a few others have mentioned elsewhere, use the InSSIDer utility to scan for other wifi routers in the neighborhood.

Another possibility for interference is that one or more more of your neighbors have started up their own wifi routers and all of them are defaulting to the same channel.

It is very easy to ID crowded wifi channels with a util like InSSIDer. Using that info, you can set the default channel of your own router to 'something else'.

Wireless routers should auto-scan for uncrowded channels, but its not a dynamic thing. Often you can get better results by finding an uncrowded channel manually and setting the router to use that as default.

Do you think this would also work for mobile broadband?

I have just recently started to have the same problem with my mobile broadband. I contacted my service provider, and they told me that everything was running normaly. It's quick and downloads are o.k too, although every half hour or so my connection goeas dead and I have to reconnect, where as before like I said it was running like a dream.

    any ideas?

No. Mobile broadband is based on cellular transmission which occurs on a different RF frequency and wavelength. This is why your microwave doesn't interfere with your cell phone, but can interfere with wifi.

that solution didn't work, also how can I uninstall the driver and restart my computer? because every time I restart, it reinstalls the wifi driver automatically

Check to see what your lease time is set for your connections. Set to never expire or 12 hr.

If dsl, try a 1492 MTU, def is 1500 (auto). Some sites do not work well with 1500 at times.

Looks like an issue with the computer.
Try safe mode /w networking. Tap F8 when you turn on the system and choose that option. See how it works then. If it works fine, it is an issue with a programs loading up when the computer starts or the security software. Post the results.
