my friend has an old compaq laptop running windows 2000.

it can't connect to any network, and when i try to configure it's tcp/ip settings it says something along the lines that an adapter must be set up first.

in device manager the network adapter is picked up fine as the following:

    Intel(R) PRO/100 P Mobile Combo Adapter

    with driver version 7.0.26.0 .

i tried to reinstall the device and at the end it gave this message:

This device cannot start (Code 10)

i googled this term, and it seems that the recommended solution is to upgrade the driver. The only problem is that this adapter is so old that intel no longer supports this device.

So are there any ideas either on other ways to fix this problem or where I can get new drivers for this adapter.

Finally just in case I've jumped to the wrong conclusion, there's one other thing I noticed. The computer is set up with a specified domain name, probably from a previous network. Will that make a difference when trying to connect to this current network?

You'd probably get a better answer if you posted this in the Networking and Wireless section. Perhaps Chaz or another moderator could move this thread.

If you card is that old you might want to consider investing in a new card. If not, try your card in a google search and put drivers next to it. Im there might be drivers from somewhere else out there.
