Hello, a couple of weeks ago I bought my first laptop, a 'Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 2428', and i've got a problem with the internet connection, it's slow, very slow. I am supposed to have about 10Mbit/s up and down and it does work fine on my other computer (not a laptop), however on the laptop speedtest.net tells me I only have about 0,5Mbit/s.
I have tried to find a solution to this but have not succeded. There are quite a few threads where people have problems with their internet-speed but in almost all cases they use a wireless connection and a router which I don't.
The problem has been here from the start and it does'nt help if I disable Windows firewall. My network card is 'Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC' and I have installed what I believe to be the latest drivers to it, namely these: http://152.104.125.41/downloads/dow...d=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false . I use Windows Vista 32.
I'm at a loss here and any help would be greatly appreciated, I don't know computers very well and might be overlooking something simple.

    Thanks in advance, kakua

What type of wireless setup do you have? B, A, G, N? What is your router? Do you use encryption, mac filtering? What channel are you broadcasting on?

The only firewall i use is windows own built-in one, and the problem remains if I disable it. As far as other internet protection programs, I don't think so, other than the anti-virus application Avast, however the problem with the speed was there before I installed it. I don't have a wireless setup but have the computer directly plugged into the wall (I have a fiber-connection). And the rest of the questions pre-supposes that i do use a wireless setup, right?
And the cable is obviously working fine since I don't have this problem when using it on the other computer.

    Thanks, kakua

Oh, ok. I thought you were using wireless. This actually makes it easier to trouble shoot. Did you try using a different port on the router? I know you said you tried the other cable already. Did you uninstall the nic driver and reinstall it?

Have you disable IPv6? in not do so.

Does sound more like a driver issue, though. May want to take a close look at the advanced properties.

Yiou are getting something, 500kbps, so it could also be that you are not receiving a good signal, get closer to the router and run speedtest again.

Upppps, that's why he should use wireless :D

In that case I think he has a problem, I will re-read the whole issue description.

    As I said, I don't use a router.

I have tried to disable IPv6, it didn't help. As far as the advanced properties, i'm afraid i'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Is there no-one out there who have a clue what causes this and how to solve it?

You have fiber and no router? What is the name and model of the modem?

I don't think I have a modem, I connect the cable from the computer straight into a socket in the wall.

I understand, but what is behind that jack, do you know? There must be as a minimum a modem, and then, most likely and hopefully router.

Is this your home, dorms, work?

It's where I live (an apartment in Sweden). I must correct myself, the cable is connected into a small white box which is mounted directly on the wall. A friend of mine says that the box converts the fiber-signal into an electric signal which the computer is able to read.

Yes it is. There are about... hm, about 30 apartments i think. Where are you going with this? Doesn't the fact that the internet-connection work just fine on my other computer mean that whatever causes this must be in the laptop?

    Thanks.

Yes, you are right, I was just trying to understand why you are not aware of the network system (modem, router), and now I understand, the main equipment is probably in a central room where we have the telephone lines termination block as well.

What I would do is try to check the parameters as entered in your other computer's network car adapter and push them manually in your new laptop network adapter.

You may try running cablenut. It's the only optimizer I have found that worked for me. I had a similar problem between browsers. IE 5 mbps vs FF 1.5. Cablenut was the only optimizer that worked, and it made both browser come near the same speed. After running it FF went to 6mbps and IE 5.2mbps, which is what I expect with it's large overhead. Download the aux pack with it. It has more connection settings.

Fiber-optic networks are similar to DSL when it come to the settings.

If your not using a router with the FO service, your ISP may be limiting your speed since the mac address is not registered with them.

I have problem with the speed no matter what application I use, it's not just when i use the internet browsers. So optimizing them won't help.
And I called the company which provides the internet service for me yesterday but unfortunately they weren't able to help.

    Thanks anyways.

You are saying that the computer is slow even when you are not using internet?

In that case you may have spywares on your computer or register corruption, try to run ccleaner to clean up your computer.

I haven't tried cablenut no, I read that some people have had problems with cablenut on computers with Windows Vista. On their website it doesn't say that cablenut supports Vista.

I've got a question. I'm thinking about trying to install another operating system (Windows Vista Ultimate) and see if that solves the problem. But if I did so, would I be able to restore the computer to it's original state with the recovery-discs? It's Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it right now.

    yes you could

just format the partition C: that vista ult is on

    then use the recovery disks

but I'm pretty sure you could just stick in the recovery disks too

but I don't really think installing ultimate is going to solve your problem........
