So after getting my first laptop, i purchased a d-link Dl-524 and as soon as it arrived i dived into setting up the connections but things never go as planned do they? here's the problem....

for the past three years, i've been using a usb cable to connect my cable modem to my computer to free up the ethernet port on the comp for the xbox. well now that i got teh router, (after a suggestion on these boards) i was going to connect the modem straight to the router and then share the connection with the xbox, the comp and the laptop. BUT...seems like the ethernet port on the modem is either dead or stuck to USB Mode (which i highly doubt is possible). i disconnected the modem from its power supply so that it could reset but after a couple minutes of wait, the ethernet port was still unable to connect. even the indicator lights on the back don't turn on. (i have the usb disconnected if that's what you're thinking).

feeling really owned by circumstances, i decided that i will connect the modem to the comp using USB and instead of connecting the xbox to the comp, i will connect the router to the comp and then split the connection from there. i connected my lappy to Port 1 and was able to get into D-link's configuration page on http://192.168.0.1 but i still can't connect to the internet, not through ethernet neither wirelessly....

If you don't want to read my heartbreaking story, you can read this instead. My modem's ethernet port has went dead and Below is what i want to be able to achieve.

    Deviation,

Nice hand drawn picture! :) My cousin has a similar problem as you, he's got a USB modem from his ISP and can't connect via ethernet. The only suggestion I could make was to get a USB to eithernet adapter so you can connect your USB modem to the ethernet port. It should (let me stress SHOULD) allow you to connect your modem to your router and give you complete access to the internet. The only issue is that you'll have to buy another piece of hardware. Goto Staples or Best Buy where they have a return policy and try out one of these devices. If it works you can keep it, if not, you can return it.

    Good Luck!

Good to see that the ethernet port started working! I know there's adapters to allow a USB port on a computer to be coverted to ethernet, but haveing a USB modem to ethernet is a bit more difficult to locate, but I think it does exist (could be wrong). But since it's working now, no need to bother looking.
