    Hello,

I have a desktop pc running on windows xp...
I currently don't have a notebook, but am interested in the Dells. I have some questions about getting connected with a notebook running on windows os.

Do I just need a wireless router to do this? Would I need a network adapter? And adapter cards?
What information needs (if any) to be entered in a notebook that comes with built in wifi, to get it up and running to the internet? And Where do find the info that needs to be entered into a notebook.

The reason I ask is... I had bought a dell pocket pc and linksys router. I could not setup the ppc to use its pocket explorer. I did not know what info (ip address, gateway number, etc, to enter and where in the ppc) I fear I will have the same problem with a notebook  I had posted in forums, and it was quite confusing. I was frustrated and returned everything :(

    Thank you, Kimmi

most notebooks just have a switch you can turn the wifi on and off at will...you will need a wireless router to take advantage of it in your home how ever and if you want wifi on your desktop you will need to purchase a wifi PCI card and install it....

i dont know much about pocket PCs but i'm sure they arn't nearly as user friendly as laptops are...from what i understand it just requires minimal set up...especialt with centrino technology...

its more like seting up a plug and play network with windows XP than it is configuring a bunch of numbers and setings to get it to work...

or at least thats my impression , i have no real hands on experiance, just what i've read and seen...

i do know the place i'm at right now has an active wifi connection and every one who brought a laptop with wireless cappabilities only had to turn their wifi on to gain access...so it cant be that hard to set it up...

    just my two cents :)

Hi Kimmi, and welcome to the forum,

On Pocket PC you just turn on the wireless. If the router is set to deal the IP addresses then PPC will get one too. If your comp and Pocket Pc are on the same network, you just have to map the drive and voila. All notebook data available on pocket pc. It is in fact very easy. There is no need for manual setting gateway and static Ip addresses. You only set the router with the DHCP enabled and set the security. All wireless devices that are connecting will get IP and you will be asked for password that you have set in the router security. It is that simple. What is more interesting all wired comps on LAN connecting to that router directly (via included hub/switch) or through any other hub/switch will also get their IP addresses and you will have the mixed wired/wireless network in no time. I have PPCs for 4 years now and have done all possible combinations through Bluetooth, ActiveSync and Wlan connections. It works perfectly. I have MDA PRO with Windows Mobile 5.0 right now and it is a real mean machine.

    Cheers,
