Using WinXP and Zero Config; in my home with my own Wifi access point.

Periodically a balloon pops up to say there is no network. Usually a few seconds later another balloon says "a network is available". But it does not connect till I open the list of available networks (which includes some neighbours') and select the access point and click "connect". This despite "connect automatically" being selected.

How do I make it reconnect automatically?

Affirmative. (Because replies have to be at least 10 characters, so "yes" won't post.)

First, go under Wireless Network Connection Properties --> Wireless networks tab and take a look at preferred networks list, be sure the network is there and delete other networks if there are some

Did that, but it still does not reconnect until I click "connect".

It does connect by itself on the initial boot.

The signal strength is pretty good, I don't know why it should change at all as both the laptop and AP are stationary. I'll probably move the AP so it has a direct line of sight, will need some cabling. But that doesn't explain the failure to reconnect.

PS: Apologies, just confirmed that the service pack is actually SP1, not SP2. So I'll upgrade that and see if it fixes it.

This is my wife's laptop, I was relying on my (faulty) memory.

Well, applying SP2 does seem to have improved WZC.
It can reconnect by itself now.

    Thanks!

Also you might want to update your drivers.
