hi there ,,,, i am very new to wireless networking .... just recieved my dell e1705 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 Internal Wireless and Bluetooth card.

i am confused about the diff "G" routers ..... there is G, Super G , and G w/ speed boost. will all of these work with my card or are they all propreitary?? i know MIMO requires a diff card than i have but it seems like there are multiple "G" standards.

please help me sort this out

    thnx

    Lets see where to begin...

I wouldn't suggest the speedbooster unless you got a speedbooster wireless ard in your computer, which you currently don't. I have a wireless router from Linksys model WRT54G. You might get some response from some people saying that this router might not be good. I've updated the firmware to a 3rd party and now its much better. :)

If you go linksys, Do not buy the WRT54G v5, these are junk, since they moved away from the linux firmware. Version 2-4 are good units. The WRT54GL is ok as well as the WRT54GS.

    Netgear and Dlink are good.

It does not really matter. You will likely not ever reach the router speed capacity. Any "G" will do.

The WRT54G works fine, blue68f100. I have one, and it does everything I need, and I have a web and mail server running behind it, as well as bittorrenting and so on. I get very good connectivity through 5 walls, all through the basement and all the way to the street. The WRT54GL gives you more options, but it's not necessary, especially for a newbie and a basic home user.

Lot of people have complained about the WRT54G overheating and having to be reset a lot.
If you can get the WRT54GL, thats the version of it that wasn't gimped and has the linux OS. It's a bit pricier, but worth every penny. I've had great luck with it so far.

I use a D-Link DI-624. It's a revision D model. I heard of problems with the earlier models but this one has been fine.

It's got WPA security, which is primarily why I bought it.

I HIGHLY recommend a linksys as they are easy to set up, never drop signal, and work out of the box. v5 of the wrt54g is fine. I have one and the only reason people complain about it is b/c it lost proprietary firmware support. If you do want that feature though, you can get the wrt54gl for around the same price (I would've picked a gl up if i knew about it).

v5/wrt54g is also extremely bad for anything involving many simultaneous connections (say, 40+) which makes it almost unusable in some cases (p2p, maybe even some on-line gaming). This router also has only half the memory of older routers and wrt54gl. So the problem with this router is NOT only the proprietary software.
