    hi,

i've noticed a pretty weird behavior, and google didn't find a note about it... (maybe i've used wrong keywords, dunno)

i had some troubles with internet connection and some other things after an inproper firewall uninstallation. i made it all work (system restore involved), but right after i've installed Nokia PC Suite back again - wifi started to disconnect & connect & disconnect & connect immediately, almost every minute. web browser was not able to open any link for the first click - had to click 2 or 3 times always... info-bubble about being connected to an available network was plopping from the systray all the time. i was going crazy.

system event log is full of following messages...
The system detected that network adapter Intel(R)...Link 5100 AGN - Packet Scheduler Miniport was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

immediately after this nokia thing uninstallation, this problem vanished.

so i wanted to ask: is that a known issue? is there a fix? i've searched but didn't find anything... i need to backup stuff from two nokia phones now and then, i can always install the software, backup & uninstall again as a workaround, but it's a pain.

details: win xp (all updates), nokia pc suite 7.1.18 (latest available), wifi card Intel WiFi link 5100 (latest drivers). it's happening no matter if i'm using windows or AVG firewall.

thanks in advance for any hints... and, happy christmas, too. :)

Try going into device manager, expand the view, and disable WAN port definition of your wireless card. See if the conflict goes away.

    Merry Christmas

    cheers ...

thanks for the suggestion, however, i must admit i cannot find that option... (maybe it's different windows language, maybe it's my eyes)

    - in the device manager, i go to the wireless card properties, advanced settings (2nd tab), is it supposed to be there? could you please describe the item a bit more just in case that the wording is different? or, if i'm wrong, please point me to the right direction, thanks a lot. :)

In device manager, click on the View tab, and choose "show hidden devices"

    cheers ...

thanks, so... i have six hidden devices regarding WAN - do i guess correctly that it is the 4th one to be disabled?

    Connection WAN Miniport (PPTP)
    WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP) - AVG miniport driver
WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
    WAN Miniport (L2TP)
    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)

sorry for stupid questions, nothing in the listed devices properties looks suspicioiusly... and i don't know much about networking. (but i'm trying to learn quickly...)

sorry for the delayed reply, i really appreciate your help.

after disabling the device, my firewall gets into an error state... so, unfortunately, this solution is a blind lead, correctly working firewall is a must.

anyway, if you find a minute for a brief explanation: what exactly should be fixed by disabling the device? i mean, it seems that it needs to be enabled for the FW being able to work correctly, most probably also other things (but i didn't want to stay too long unprotected, so i've enabled it shortly again and haven't noticed other glitches). the thing tries to connect repeatedly when Nokia PC Suite is installed, that's correct; but it's not the actual bug: the bug is, that it was *disconnected* first...

and, i've received an answer from Nokia Careline today. basically saying, that every application installation has certain requirements for RAM memory (what the hell??? of course, and the computer needs to be switched on too, they forgot to mention), and that unfortunately, it is not possible to confirm that the wifi issues are caused by PC Suite. - okay, i uninstall PC Suite, issue vanishes, but the issue is NOT CAUSED BY PC SUITE. surreal.

so i'll continue with looking for the solution... i don't hope that i'll make them fix the bug, but who knows.

(P.S. for any mod - maybe this should be moved to the networking part of the forums..? sorry for the mess, i wasn't sure originally, as it's some conflicting sw and also wireless issue.)

Have you tried blocking pc suite via a firewall so its stops messing with the connection?

Also try an older version of Nokia PC suite which doesnt utilize your wifi.

thanks, i had to create a new FW configuration so that blocking it now was a matter of few clicks in FW ask dialogs... done, i'll try rebooting and will see what happens. at the moment, no disconnects happen even when PC suite is installed back again. but also no website opens for the first click... :(

regarding trying some older version - i must admit that i pretty much like this new version... and they (nokia) will most probably to refuse any support then, but it's worth of a try if blocking by FW won't help.

edit: no disconnets at the moment... but web browsing is affected (timeouts... and it's necessary to click every link several times for the site to start being loaded), no matter that the PC Suite is blocked by FW. it's messing with the wifi locally somehow.

uninstalled again. i'll try to use some older version later today... and will keep bugging nokia careline to at least try to determine the root of the issue. thanks for all help again.

I hate the nokia software. Its very invasive, it puts itself on startup.

Im not familiar with the latest version but maybe you can customize the install to omit the wifi connectivity stuff.

testing postponed, my neighbour who's sharing his wifi with me is gone for holidays now and his router needs a restart. the only wifi i'm seeing now is so unstable that it's impossible to be sure that "yes, it's the bug" or "eh, it's that network". ok, testing will continue when i have a stable wifi again. :)

regarding the nokia installer... it gives no option to customize the installation. the startup stuff can be easily removed (with ccleaner or whatever), but i still haven't found what the hell it does with the wifi, so that i could fix it myself.

or maybe nokia careline will surprise me with the solution in the meantime, who knows.

    okay, update.

it seems that i cannot reproduce the bug with an english version of PC Suite!!! woohooo. so i'll use EN version instead of CZ, it's able to work with special characters as well and i don't really need the czech menu, so... at least as a temporary solution, it's better than uninstalling and reinstalling that thing constantly. it's funny as the number of the version is the same... but there must be some difference.

i'll send the details to nokia careline, yesterday i called there instead of e-mailing... which was a good idea, the technician had no clue what it could be caused with, but she was willing to cooperate, get details etc, and to escalate a possible bug to the devs. perfect. using a third nokia phone in the row, i appreciate that someone is willing to solve the issues really.

he-he... I have absolutely the same PC (Latitude E5500) and absolutely the same problem with Nokia PC Suite. New (English!) PC Suite interrupts WiFi connection... anyone with working solution? (I can't deinstall PC Suite, because I use it for outlook sync, connection bridge etc)
