    hi!

i had vista on my lappy, after installing xp and all the drivers everything is functioning fine except for the wlan.. there is no connectivity. i have used the same place where i always use the lappy of my sis and the connection is good. is it because i have changed from vista to xp? is there something i can do to receive connection?

i have a second question, nothing to do with wlan though but a new thread is not necessary i think.. what does f.e. 256 mb mean from the graphics card like go 7600 with 256mb?

Second question first: 256mb on the go7600 means that there is 256mb of ram available for your card to use. This includes any dedicated ram + turbocache or something.

First question: are you able to connect to any other wireless spots? Try taking the laptop to a coffee shop or something; usually those places have open wireless access. If you can't connect to ANY wireless services, I suggest reinstalling the wireless driver.

p.s. Could you give some hardware info for your wireless? Is it an Intel 3945abg wireless chip? Or a Broadcomm? Or something else? This info will help other, more knowledgeable people troubleshoot :)

Hm... Sometimes I've had random periods of time where windows won't connect to my home wireless no matter what. You could also just try setting the IP address manually. How ARE you connecting wirelessly if you don't have a wireless router?

Oh one more thing. If you usually need a password or something to get wireless access, you might wish to double check that you're using the same encryption as what you're trying to connect. WEP doesn't work when the wireless network uses WPA :)

    thx for answering again =)

we can connect because some of our neighbour got wlan, so we are kind of borrowing it.. hm wep, wpa.. think i ll just wait for our router since i dont know how to do that xD.. if it then still doesnt function then i ll try to do that wpa thingy..

one more thing i forgot to ask about the graphics card.. does the mb play a big role? if the graphics card is a dedicated one, its not automatically a good one but it also depends on the mb or is the mb not that important?

So, you are "sort of boprrowing" your neighbor's network? Did you get permission? If not, I hope you understand that you are stealing and that this sort of thing is not condoned here. You won't get much help if you are in fact stealing from your neighbor.

Heh, I can also see some unsecured connections with my wireless. But I can never seem to connect to those, even though they don't use any encryption. So I don't think it's a problem with drivers, more like the signal is too weak and windows is fooling you ;)

For graphics, dedicated ram is better than shared ram because ... well, shared ram is shared between your operating system and your graphics. This way it'll lose some performance. Dedicated ram is better because it's made specifically for graphics and isn't affected by how much ram your operating system is currently using.

And like you guessed, graphics card performance isn't measured by how many MB of ram it has. The graphics processor is the pivotal point, although more ram is generally a good thing. If you had a really powerful graphics processor (GPU) but it had like 4MB of ram, it's really not going to do anything useful aside from display your desktop and play some old DOS games. On the other hand, if you have a weak GPU but a lot of ram, some of the ram might not get completely used to full potential.
