    hi,
i have a gateway p-7805u or p7805u laptop, and when i booted up my system the wifi didn't work even though the card still showed up in the device manager.
so after many tries (reinstalling drivers, removing and placing back the card) i figured the card was faulty and bought a centrino ultimate-n 6300 mini pci card and just installed it.
the laptop recognized the driver and i downloaded the correct drivers and installed it but its not picking up any signals.

    anyone have any idea?
    thanks

The switch is in the ON position, but when i put it in OFF or ON, it shows no difference on the screen.
how would i know if the switch is broken?
also, the Fuction key + F2 turns the wifi on/off, but that does not do anything either.

If that is anything like the dv9000 I had several years ago, you need to install some quick-key/control software for those to work.
In my case I could turn the wlan off but never back on unless I rebooted. So missing the software could be reason if your wlan is now permanently in off position.

Unfortunately I have no idea what kind of software there should be, I've had such computer in my hands.

you got me thinking that my switch is the problem and it WAS
i just searched some ways to turn on the wlan switch, and ran across this first thing in google: Broken Wireless Hardware Switch Fix

it's about how you can put a tape over a single pin on your wifi card.
supposedly, for pci cards, you cover the 13th pin and the wifi will just work because the 13th pin is the 'reset' pin.
for pci mini cards, its the 20th pin, which is the 2nd pin from the gap between the two pin sets, the side with the higher pin count.
something like this, lay down your pci card like this with the pins facing down:
    [][][][][][][][][][][][][][*][]==[][][][][][]
just put a tiny piece of tape over the 2nd pin which is marked with a asterisk (*).
looking at the photos from the link will help.
i hope other people can find this post and the other link useful!!
i had a mini pci express micro card, so it looked a bit different, but the solution is the same. just cover the 2nd pin from the gap in the higher pin count side.
thanks KLF for your help too
