I just got D-link wireless router. Just purchased a laptop so needed it.

But i was wondering, I just set it up through my desktop that is wired with cable.
Can I put a wireless card in this desktop and move it ? The only room I can actually have 'Wired' internet is my kids toy room...The rest of the rooms are wired for dish network, and not cable.

I'd like to move the desktop upstairs. So Can i just have the modem and the wireless router in the toy room? With no computer hooked up to them?
Or would i be better off digging up an old system out of my storage just to act as a 'hub' or w/e and hide it in a toybox ?

    What is your isp?
The thing is unless you want to have all your computers networked through wireless, then you can simply have the the modem and wireless router by themselves. Otherwise your isp could probably run a a cable wire all the way to where you need it to be.

You can put a wireless card in your desktop, and you can more than likely have just have the router connected to the internet connection; then configure it wirelessly. Check online (or in the box) for the manual - it will no doubt confirm whether this can be done, and most importantly give you the default password you'll need to configure the router.

my isp is comcast, who already loathe me for not getting the super special 3 way 'deal' lol. im sure they will charge me a ton.

i don't actually have a tv int he room id like to put the desktop, but i already took my modem up there and checked and it doesn't connect. i have to go rewire something int he basment i would guess, figuring out what is where i go crazy.

Surely if your wireless signal works fine where you need it to, then the simplest option is just to buy a wireless card for your desktop as you originally questioned?

Ok cool. So configure the router through the desktop first, set up the network/pw etc. then move the desktop and connect it to the wireless.

thank you, i was hoping i could do this but did not want to drop another 50 bucks on a wireless..going broke after the laptop/cooler/router purchase this week(not to mention a 5 year olds Barbie Bike, kids need toys too i guess)

First thing I would do is with your laptop, test the connection strength wherever you want to place your desktop, and do so for an hour or so of internet surfing to be sure there are no connection drops.

If that's all fine then buy a card and shift the computer. Most routers don't need you to be hardwired in to configure, but you might as well if you are going to test connectivity elsewhere in the house.

good idea. i will try that(lappy isn't here yet, probably within 2 weeks..i hope)

obviously id prefer to just wire it in that room but this is what im looking at downstair, and it just makes my head hurt
