I've upgraded my plan here in Australia (through Telstra) to whats called Ultimate cable, basically it gives a jump from 30mbp/s to 100. I did a speedtest and I got a down speed of roughly 53mbp/s (it was set in router as 20mhz). So I then changed it to 40mhz and re-ran the test and got anywhere from about 80-94mbp/s down (on channel 9 which is the highest option for throughput). The router is the CG3100D-2 netgear one. On my old router i would get anywhere from 14-19mbp/s down.

Anyone familiar with this router and what settings are best for this. I have a Killer 1102 wifi card running Atheros drivers.

My main gripe is even though speedtest reports higher results, it hasn't really made that much of a difference in terms of download speeds, but loading websites and videos is noticeably quicker.

Download speeds depends on a server- it's not likely that you would get 100mbps unless you're a paying customizer and you're downloading from that server.
So I nothing seems to be wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply. The strange thing i did notice was that even though i changed it from 20mhz to 40mhz the status of the connection still shows it at 144 instead of 300 (which is for N). Any insight on that?

According to 802.11n specification 40MHz channels should default back to 20MHz when neighboring networks are present and channels would overlap, so it's possible that your 40MHz is not really working at 40MHz but that contradicts your speedtests that show increased speed with 40MHz.

I dont think theres any issue with your router.

Even though your connection can do 100mbps, most file servers you download off will have a speed limit. They cant just give unlimited bandwidth for everyone.

Try downloading a well seeded file from torrents or usenet, and you should see the better part of your 80-94mb/s in action.

Ya i can definitely understand that side: where I don't have any guaranteed speeds or anything, nor would i receive unlimited bandwidth. Also, that my actual speeds and what not would be effected by a number of things at any given time.

Had a further look into this router's info by searching endlessly online and reading through pages and pages on forums that apparently this router can't actually do 5ghz even though it says it. It actually still operates on the 2.4ghz. Strange.

Thanks for all the help, I'll try Telstra live chat (from what i hear they are a lot better than any other Telstra channel to go through) and play with settings to see what works best. If I find anything worthwhile I'll report back.

Edit: As per your torrent idea, I have tried so far highest I've seen is 950 down speed so far. Have tested only a few. Weird thing is though in Azureus, when I go to options > transfers > auto speed... the speed reflected is actually substantially low for downspeed (upspeed seems fine). and then it automatically sets weird numbers like saying my actual azureus speedtest results in it being substantially lower to the online speedtest (about 80%) lower. After a little while it'll drop the results down really low to reflect upload limit: 3 (3.4kb/s, download limit: 8 (25kb/s) for download limit it'll say 'estimate choke'. Not sure if that would effect torrent speeds.
