From the little I know, both systems must be configured for Ad Hoc mode as opposed to Infrastructure which is for accessing the Internet.

my laptop is also connected wirelessly to it

the workgroup is mshome on both, and i am able to get on internet on both just not able to get on the other pc to access the partitions i created for this purpose last week.

Did you disable all of them? That includes if you have Virus protection on each computer, that firewall (if there is one) needs to be disabled.

if that doesn't work, try creating the network again with the firewall off

Since you didnt join domain, then it would be easier.
Did you shared your folder and set permission?
Did you try to ping from PC > laptop and laptop > PC? Pingable?

If your laptop and PC are not in the list of MSHOME, then try access by Start > Run > then type \\YOURCOMPUTERNAME\\YOURFOLDER

I hope this would help you or you have done.

i did try typing in the address directly and tried with all firewalls off. Ive had this problem with a multi port network card before neither appeared on each other after the first time, i scrapped that it was to pathetic

    I got a quick question.

Do you enable "netbios over TCP/IP" for both of your computers?

    hmmmm.. strange...

As long as Netbios is enable, then you may able to see each other.
I got tons of silly questions... I wanna know what is hidding behind.
Is there anything to do with the "Wireless Card Access List" in your router?
    Client for Microsoft Network installed?
What IP address for your Laptop, PC and router having?
