details, some NOOB wired the house wrong, thinking that you could share a single cat5 cable with 3 people using just a splitter....

I'm looking to pick up a network switch so I can actualy fix this problem, I've used routers/modems/etc before but this is my first time dealing with a switch. Is there anything I need to know?

Does anyone have any recommendations on something under $40? I only need 3-4 ports....

For a basic home user, just get whatever switch you want that will have the ports that you need. I got an 8port trendnet green from Dell for cheap ($27.99 CAN), and it works as advertised.
Do you have a router that this will be connected to already? or are you going to go with static IP addressing for these computers for LAN?
