I just picked up a Toshiba M105 which is mostly really nice. I'm having an annoying problem: I'm connected strongly to my home wireless network. Every few minutes, though, I get a popup box titled Network Connections, with a drop-down labeled "Choose a connection" and asks me to pick from a couple.

I hit cancel, it goes away, and all is fine until the next time it comes up.

One complicating factor is I've got the Verizon broadband wireless pc card. I have the verizon software controlling the card, and the toshiba-loaded Intel Proset Wireless thingy controlling the wifi.

My previous laptop had no conflict issues between the verizon card and the built-in wifi.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks much

I'm not in front of a PC w/ wireless right now, but if you view the Wireless connections, there's an 'Advanced' option on the right. In the Advanced options, turn off the setting called something like 'Automatically connect to available wireless networks'. Then, in the list of networks in the white box in Advanced, remove any networks there except for the one(s) you really want to connect to. This should prevent the wireless from hopping around whenever there's a slight change in the signal strength.

    Hope it helps...

    Thanks for the reply.

I think there's actually a conflict between the Intel Proset Wireless adapter and the VZAccess software than controls my verizon broadband card.

In my old laptop, I had no real issues connecting to wifi or the verizon broadband, and could use either the vzaccess software or the windows wifi to connect to wifi.

In this one, I've been having trouble connecting to Verizon; it'd connect, say "authenticating..." and then after about a minute would come back with "remote computer failed to respond." Wifi connections are great with it, but I get the network connections box popping up every so often.

I tried every combination I could think of, between the Intel ProSet, VZAccess, and windows wifi telling each to control something or be disabled; no luck.

So, I uninstalled Intel Proset. Now I can connect to Verizon with no problems, but it no longer finds wifi connections.

Seems like there's something in the Proset software that the wifi antenna needs, but it conflicts with the Verizon VZAccess software.

Any ideas on how to track that sort of thing down?

    Thanks much

if that is the case then you should disable the wifi when you use the Verizon card. I have the Verizon card in my Dell laptop as well and I don't have any conflict issues. My bos has a cingular card and has to diable his wifi card in his laptop(exact same model as mine).

You should be using one or the other, either the Verizon card for the verizon broadband or the built in wifi for any other local wiresless access point.

Thanks. Doesn't seem to be that simple. I've tried completely uninstalling the Proset Wireless utility, turning the wifi antenna off, turning it back on, setting up VZAccess to look only for wwan, setting it to look for wifi and wwan, turning the wireless zero service on and off; I haven't found a combination that will allow the VZAccess to connect successfully every time. It'll work for a while, then I'll move from wifi to wwan and it won't work; at that point I pretty much have to try random things to try and get it to connect.

Seems like there's some basic conflict going on that intercepts the vzaccess connection. Any ideas?

I've also uninstalled the "transparency" thing on the vzaccess, as that was causing trillian to crash. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the root of the connection problems.

    Thanks for any ideas..
