I have the ASUS g1s-a1 and recently everytime I turn on windows vista ultimate (from reboot or after shut down) the computer is unable to gain internet access...

It can see the local connection but can't get to the internet, however if I unplug and replug the cable then I get access right away. Doing windows Repair it says there is somthing wrong with the dns, but I dont understand why simply removing the cable and replugigng repairs the issue... it is just a little bothersome to have to do this everytime I turn the computer back on... any ideas? Thanks.

Also I had just recently installed new drivers (via Microsoft Update) and thought that might be the issue so I tried rolling back, and even getting the drivers off the Asus website, but that did not fix the issue.

Also, if I currently have an active connection and do ipconfig /renew, I lose connectivity and only get local access again, and repair gets the same cannot connect to DNS issue.

Are you using a router, or straight from your computer to the modem?

I am attending the University of Michigan and am on their network but I think it is on my end. I am running the connection through a hub, as I have other things connected to the internet, but those things dont have this problem.
And it only just started (everything has been working fine for 6+ months)

Some universities have rules against hub's and routers. Also if the NB is new to the university you may need to contact them to have the MAC adddress registered with them. They can also knock/prevent access if security is not up to date, but in most cases they send you a popup informing you of the problem.

If you have IP6 active you may want to disable it and see if helps.

IPv6 has been disabled for 6 months, as everything has been working fine for 6 months... I dont think it is the University end, but my computer... as I have the connection to a hub which goes to my Wii and my laptop, the Wii has no issues connecting, but my laptop only gets internet access when I unplug and re-plug it back in... if I dont do this it still sees the connetion but for some reason cant find the internet...

The only time I see that is on a driver issue. And Vista networking in general is a PITA. You might start putting a startup script in the startup folder and see if that helps.

to do what exactly? reset the driver on every reboot?
How can I prevent windows from automatically trying to install a driver when it sees one is needed, becuase the moment I uninstall the ethernet driver it installs whatever it has on file (which is the most recent)... is there also a possible driver cleaner for somthing like this that could fix the issue? Thanks for the help.

ahh, nvm... In reinstalling drivers, it reset the IPv6 checkbox, meaning it WAS enabled recently, don't know why I never checked it... I am about to do a reboot to see if that was the problem...

actully it fixed it for one reboot, the issue persists...?
