I have a wireless network setup in my house. I share files between my desktop and laptop (work, pictures, music) and would prefer it if everyone else in the house couldn’t access the files (via my network places for example). I'm looking for a simple piece of software that can password protect my shared folders. thanks for your time and any help would be much appreciated

One option is to password protect the guest account. XP uses the guest account to access network shares.

This can work well, but its downside is that all network shares are password protected.

If you set up users with a password, and use the same user and password on both your desktop and your notebook, then share only the user's files, you're set (unless someone else knows your username and password). They'll share with each other seamlessly (Windows uses the current user/password as it's first try on any share), and it will require someone else to type a password, so you can connect to it from someone else's computer if you have to.
