If you put the card back in and it was not USB per say you could hav efried the card, USB is Hotswapable to a degree, PCMCIA is deff not

I have removed my PCMCIA wifi card and reinserted it hundreds of times ;). It's perfectly safe. Hence why a PCMCIA device will show up in the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialog.

I agree with Greg, however windows doesn't like we remove accessories while they are in use. With USB drives for example you have to select the USB products icon so you can get the ok to safely remove it, but I have removed flash drives before w/e doing the above and haven't gotten problems, but is recommendable to follow the appropriate procedure..

PCMCIA cards are, at least according to the promulgated standard as discussed here for example, hot-swappable, as are express cards, according to the expresscard industry organization; however, you might want to google on your particular model and the term "hot swap" to see if there were any implementation issues the manufacturer had viz the hot-swap/plug-n-play feature of the card.
