    hi all,

I will be buying a router soon for my apartment. My roommate has a new macbook pro (g, correct?) and a usb wireless adapter for his hp desktop (g also i believe). My desktop will connect directly, but my new inspiron 1420 has the draft n card.

I am debating between these two routers. the dgl-4300 is aimed at gamers, and thats me. but it doesnt have n wireless, nor does it have a gigabit wan. i honestly dont grasp wan vs lan, but w/e.

ive heard bad things about draft-n because its just that, a draft. should i go with the definitely good dgl-4300 or go ahead and get the draft-n dir-655? also, how well does it do g and n together? also, (lol) if i get the dgl-4300, will my draft-n card in the 1420 suffer or will it work at full g speeds?

    thanks so much.

As far as I know having a draft-N wireless router will not effect the speed of the wireless G.

DIR-655 is an upgrade of DGL-4300. In other words it is stronger in nearly everything except price.

the dgl-4300 has gigabit lan, but no gigabit wan, which the dir has.

and it doesnt come off as just a newer model of the same router to me because it doesnt have the gamefuel application, something i find quite desirable.

it's more of a great gaming wireless g router vs a good wireless n router.

im only hesitant because ive read such horrible reviews on draft-n performance.

GameFuel is just DLink's name for their QoS. DIR-655 also has QoS. I dont think you will really miss it.

I have the DIR-655 and I love it. It is a step up from the 1st gen Linksys WRT54G I had before.

I am considering a similar jump, what holds me back is the price of the router ($109) + a N card ($40).

Did you run DD-WRT on your WRT54G? How big a difference would you say you experienced?

The range of the DIR was the best thing for me, as I connect my TiVo that is all the way on the other side of the house. With the Linksys it would drop the connection a lot, not with the DLINK. I also the the GigE wired network as it allows me to move video files around my desktop machines. And I like the dlink adminstration features.

I had downloaded DD-WRT, but never installed it. My Linkysys started dieing before I got around to trying it. I think there is a Buffalo router that runs DD-WRT now. My friend has it and is really happy with it to.
