    What operating system?

Have you tried disabling Mcaffee on startup to see if it is really whats causing the hold up?

What particular Macafee apps, and what version thereof, are you running?

I think it is downloading updates to the new virus definition list. It should last for only 30secs to a minute a couple times a day.

edit : If it is lasting a long time, check to see if it is set to do a scan on startup.

If you have McAfee Internet Security or Total Protection--yes, this is normal

McAfee loads multiple componants and it takes a while for them to load. Specifically, Internet, Phishing, firewall, website safety ratings and child protection have all inserted themselves between you and the internet.

Until they are all loaded, no internet for you. Think of it as a road from point A to Point B and each time you connect to the internet the road has to be built. Before you installed McAfee, there was just a little short road involving the tcpip stack and the Windows firewall--after, you added a couple of extra steps and since most of McAfee is loading after you hit your welcome screen it just takes a couple of extra seconds

I got rid of all my Mcafee products recently and I am happy I did. You might want to look into free products like Avria or AVG.
