i bought the wrt 54g router by linksys. no problems setting it up and getting security enabled. The problem i have is that every other day of so it seems to freeze up and i have to unplug and reset it. this is quite annoying and i know is the router because i can plug my cat 5 cable directly from the computer into the cable modem and then every thing works. then i reconnect back thru the router and its down. if im not in a hurry and just leave it alone it might reset itself within an hour or so. i upgraded it to the most recent firmware yesterday and it did it again today.

ideas - i guess i could return it for a netgear.

i think so - i held it down for a while (just intuition as alot of things reset like that) and it seemed to reset to defaults. this did fix the problem, but i had to reset all of my security, ssid broadcast, and other settings which is a pain. and the problem represented itself the next day. this would be fine if this was a once every 8-12 weks event, but daily or even weekly is a bit of a hassle. ill check the fourm referenced above and see what turns up.

last note - it didnt seem to have this trouble for the first week or two and i didnt make any changes that coincided with these issues.

What version of the WRG54G do you have? Have you checked the Linksys site or any Linksys specific forums for similar issues?

If this is a new router, you can always exchange it for a new one.

I've heard the latest version is junk. It's not even based on Linux, I believe it's running some sort of Windows system. I know there are some good posts on the hyperwrt site. You might want to check it out.

If I were in your shoes... I'd exchange it right away. If the problem persists... then you can either:
    1) Flash a newer firmware (if available)
    2) Re-program it
    3) Buy a NetGear router...

Try flashing to 1.0001 or whatever the latest version , its using. That should fix the problem...I heard it fixes an issue with WPA and 'the hang' issue that you were saying. I'm assuming that you're using WPA. Try flashing the latest frimware

If fails , get a replacement , if possible opt for WRT54G V4...or get a Netgear Router !

Are you downloading files with BT?
I have a same router, except i got the v4 one, and I had exact same problem as you decribed. I ended up powercycled the **** pos every once a while. but after i upgraded to hyper firmware the problem is gone. i believe the original firmware has an issue with router getting too much connections and wont update itself something like that.

No - i dont use bittorrent.

    Mine is a v5 router.

I do have the latest firmware from linksys - its 1.06 i believe.

I just got home from a weekend trip. when i turned on the computer - no internet. so i pulled the power cable on the router, waited ten seconds, plugged it back in, waited about 30 seconds and all was fine. This has been a daily occurance for the last couple of weeks. it didnt seem to have this problem when i first got it.

i guess ill just ebay/return it and get a netgear. too bad as i liked how this stacked with my linksys cable modem.

is there hyper firmware for the v5 wrt54g models? i thought it was only for v4 and older.

Did you ever figure out the solution to this problem? I have the exact same issue with the same Linksys model. It freezes up and I have to reinstall the router. Internet connection is fine if I just cut the router out of the circuit. I have been having to do this about every three days and am trying to weigh the hassle of getting exchanging the old router and installing a new one vs. trying to fix this one.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

^ This router is a piece of crap in my opinion. I'd buy a WRT54GL. The GL's still run on version 4, but probabily won't for a logn time. They're much faster and reliable.

I had this problem when I moved apartment but I finally attribute it to something else:

I had no problem with 2 year old 802.11b Dlink router and same dsl modem, totally dead stable, in my old apartment. Moved to new apartment, new Lynsys 54G and same modem, every morning I had to do this reset ritual. Sometimes it also happens during the day. This generally happened in spurts of days. Plugged in my old Dlink and low and behold, same thing. Also, no problem for if I use ethernet to modem directly.

What I think: I am actually seeing both AC voltage spike problems that rest the router and the modem. However, they don't both come up at the same time and thus the syn is lost between the two - most likely the dsl acct sign up info did not get loaded from router to modem when the modem comes up? If I reboot modem and router while they are tied together with ethernet, id does not work, need to reboot separately and then plug them together with ethernet. With just ethernet to modem, somehow XP has no problem with this syn.

My problem is now much better than just 2 months ago, when snow started melting. I don't have problems with mornings at all, and once in a while, the problem comes back, say, for one afternoon requiring 3 or 4 resets.

I was almost on the verge of trying to find one of those old battery driven backups for the router and modem before the problem corrected itself.

BTW, my lynksys 54G is v.5. The problem was then with BIOS version 1, upgraded to next newest version and problem still persisted.

I finally had enough of this linksys router. I never could keep it from disconnecting both wired and wireless. I returned it to staples today (6 weeks after purchase- no questions asked) for the netgear 614 router. it is now set up and working. set up was easy enough except the wizard had the wrong mac # of the router programmed in so i had to correct that manually. Ill let you know in a few days if it disconnects also. fingers crossed.

2x to that. Linksys really botched the v5. I still recommend Linksys equipment, just make sure you get the v4 or earlier (or GL version).

Three days on the netgear 614 and no drops yet. This is much better. However, it does seem to have slowed my download speed by 1-1.5mbps. I can only get 4.5 download whereas i used to get ~6 as measured by speakeasy. if i unplug the router and retest it jumps back up to 6. doesnt seem to matter wether the wireless antennae is activated or not.

Maybe the encryption (wpa-psk) slows it down????? ddnt seem to have this slowdown with the linksys -- when it worked that is.
