I voted Linksys (know nothing about Netgear) on the sheer weight of astonishing tech support I got when trying to set up my router this weekend. Two different people were on the phone with me for a combined hour and a half until we figured out the problem (the computer settings, not the router).

I think most of this was covered in

I say wait till Compusa or any of the electronics stores around you have some kind of rebate going. Then get whatever is cheaper. Both companies make good products. I've had both, currently using Netgear and don't plan on getting another till it dies.

Yes it was J0hn. But this is fine anyway since he is asking which is better.
I work with routers every day and really, the WRT54G (My own router) is a a little bit better. I like the 614 to, i must say that looks better, but other than that, the WRT54G has a very good single all through out my house, and i never get any disconnects. The one con about linksys is that there setups arent the easiest. Even i myself have a horrible time setting mine up. For some strange reason, the online setup is a breeze. Who knows, i might have faulty software. So really, there is nothing to worry about on the 54G. :)

Yeah, I guess. But in the end, I think it'll be a matter of personal preference. You'll have guys on one side swearing by Linksys and the other Netgear. Though for the average user, I'd suggest Netgear. As nickspohn mentioned, Linksys can be rough to set up properly compared to Netgear.

I like Netgear routers. I have an G one that I recieved when I got Comcast Cable. Works great, no problems!

I don't think you can go wrong with either router you have listed, but I'm recommending Netgear because I have had a nice experience with them. ;)

Well i have the linksys and it is fantastic. I've had it for 5 straight months now and never a disconnect and my house is evenly covered. If you dont like one router, you can return that and get the new one.
Like i said, its your choice, get whatever will make you happy. ;)

Another vote for the Linksys. Got it the other day and I have been very happy with it. Always speedy, easy installation, myriad of security protocols, and reliable.

I voted for the linksys. I received a free netgear with my laptop and one day it just died. The power light won't light-up but the rest of the lights do. Sometimes they light up yellow and other times green =/ I've never had a problem with linksys - which is what I'm going to replace the netgear with.

Everyone always says Netgear if you are a beginner or just the average user. I have to beg to difer. I am just an average user and had never had any experience with networking or wireless and I had no problems at all setting up my Linksys.

I would vote for Netgear due to ease of set up. I had a 45" setup and a call to technical support to set up Linksys. I did a set up in half the time with my friend's Netgear.

I may purchase a Netgear for myself if I find the D Link to be a wash in the next couple of days. I am going to test the signal quality in the basement, outside and in the parking lot.

I voted Linksys. I'm the average user, and I didn't have a problem setting it up. The most difficult thing to figure out was that the hardware wireless switch on my computer was set to off! I think it looks very nice with the 2 alien-like antennas and the purply shade of blue. It doesn't look crazy like Linksys's draft N router from outer space!

The other part of why I'd choose Linksys is, there are lots of firmwares out there, so if you ever want to do something advanced, you know you'll be able to.

The only mysterious thing is, sometimes it says connection is merely "good" when I'm sitting a few feet away from it. It happens rarely, and it doesn't matter for surfing the net, but makes you say  However, my router is really old - it's been sitting in someone's office drawer since 2001 until he did spring (fall?) cleaning last year and said, "here's stuff I found, you can have it if you want" - oh I love freebees, right around the time that I got my laptop - so I wonder if there was a hardware update since then to fix that mystery. First thing I did was updated the firmware, which was a flash (heh heh heh) - no you just download an EXE file and run it, that's all.

Oh, I don't know why, but the Linksys routers you get from Vonage are routers from hell, at least if you want your phone to work a-la-VoIP. They weren't wireless, so it's just an FYI... The phone simply wouldn't work. I kept jiggling the cables and doing other things that really shouldn't do anything just out of having no better ideas, and after about 20 mins (or more), it mysteriously started working. I had 2 Vonage routers, and both behaved the same. Different phones & phone lines, too, so it wasn't a defective phone line or a defective router - and they were sent in separate boxes, so if one got banged up during shipping, it's a good chance that the other one didn't. Once set up, however, the service was acceptable.

Oh, and don't trust the Amazon reviews that much, or any other reviews from people you don't know, for that matter. How do you know Linksys didn't give out a bonus to all its employees that went on the Amazon site to review the router? Linksys could just tell them to review, without telling them what to say, and you know the reviews would be practically all positive. Not saying that they did that, just saying that I've reviewed a book on Amazon that I've never read because its author needed to offset a negative review...

    Good luck!

    Malia
