For some reason, after i moved back home from the dorms, the router (or internet) at my house has been crapping out like crazy. Every time i have to unplug/plug back in the router for it to restart to get it working again.

i have the linksys WRT54GS router, and i dont really know why its acting up (when it never did in the beginning). can somebody help me? im not too good with routers..

Do you torrent? I believe the WRT54G series has a firmware issue where it doesn't like a lot of connections because it stores the info about the connections for too long and fills up the routers memory. This might be the case. You will have to look into 3rd party Firmware.

There are 2 things that it might be.

    1. The router is not the probem but the modem. It loses the sync some times during the day and restarting the router forces the modem to resync. Does it always lock up during the same times of the day?

    2. You are a user of P2P filesharing. Bittorrent, emule, limewire and so on. They cause the router to overload because they open alot of connections.

The 1st thing cant be fixed. Maybe calling your provider and complaining will help. They sometimes can boost signal strenght or turning down the bandwith a little might give a more stable connection.

The 2nd problem can be fixed a few was. Putting an alternative firmware (like DD-wrt) on your router could help since the alternative frimware is more powerfull and can manage more connections. Other solution would be to go to the option of your filesharing client and limit the number of connections.

nope im not running any p2p programs.

the only thing i use is firefox, and occasionally connect to my school's ftp to download documents and stuff.

how would i go about clearing the router's "memory"?

    restarting clears the router ram.

    What firmware are you using?

I would assume that you are using wireless is your connection secure? if not someone else may be using bittorent or other p2p software

oh yea..the network isn't really secure. The connection is still labled "linksys" and has no password.

I used to have a password for both the router and the connection but then..one day..the router like defaulted back to normal and somehow i couldn't connect to the router anymore.

maybe i'll give linksys a call and see if they can give me some help...

press the reset button in back of your router for 15 seconds (little black button beside the internet connector from your modem)

That completely resets your router, then you connect to your router with:

    http://192.168.1.1

    into your url in firefox

    there is an automatic account

    Name: (nothing, leave blank)
    password: admin

then reset your connection. And see if everything is alright. Also, secure your network :p

I thought the user name and password were both "admin" by default on Linksys routers? I know that's the case on my WRT54GL, and all the WRT54G's I've used... also, plug into the router if you see anyone else's nearby. Since so many people run at the default configuration, you often get cross-talk drowning things out, and you can't always be sure you're connected to your own router unless you're using a wired connection.
