Hey all. I have a weird problem with the linksys WRT54G. I'm running vista home p with sp1 and also running a web sever off of the same computer. This computer has a static IP and the router is forwarding the sever off of port 80. I have also tryd pinging the router and generally it will be fine with times between 20-30ms and then sometimes it will be in the 130s. Is this normal?

Anyways sometimes when I'm am surfing the web I will try to go to a new page or something and it will say the connection timed out or something and then when I simply click "try again" it loads the page no problem.

This isn't specific to this computer because I am also a Xbox 360 gamer and I have the wireless adapter. The little green light on the adapter is green when it has a signal and red when it doesn't. Ill will be gaming fine with no lag and then randomly it will lag out or do something weird and then say "disconnected from xbox live" and the light will be red. I wait like 10 sec and the light turns green again and I can connect like nothing happened.

My WRT54G began dropping in and out when I loaded DD-WRT 3rd party firmware onto it and cranked up the CPU speed and the radio power. Even after going back to default settings it kept on doing this so I called it dead and I went out and got a D-Link DGL-4500 router since I wanted N anyway. Your router might be flaking out.

I just had this happen about 5 seconds ago while I was pinging the router and I didn't see a fluctuation in the ms response time at all.

When I got rid of my WRT54G and used either the Actiontec wireless router that comes with Verizon FiOS internet or my shiny D-Link router, my problems went away for good. How old is your router BTW? Mine was like ~3 years old.

hmmm I don't know but it IS old by most any standards. You think I should just call it dead and get new router? suggestions on new ones and links?

I, as I have said before, have the D-Link DGL-4500 Wireless N router.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127243&Tpk=D-Link DGL-4500

It has great range, has no problems with either my Intel 4965AGN, 2200BG, Broadcom or Netgear wireless NICs. It also has this awesome OLED screen built into it and the web interface is pretty good. It also has 4 Gigabit RJ-45 connectors and even a USB port (I think for NAS or something). I would definitely recommend it, but the price may be too steep ($169) or other forum members may have better or cheaper alternatives.

I have the WRT54G Linksys Router too; and as Jstn was saying, when I upgraded the firmware to DD-WRT I noticed the connection was dropping alot out of no where too. Which brings me to the question OP, did you flash the Router w/ this firmware?

Nevertheless the Router is somewhat old, I think it's been out like since '06, so I would say yea you may want to consider getting a new one. But just so you know my fix for the issue I had w/ frequent disconnects using the DD-WRT firmware (It has its issues; the firmware that is) was to change the Wireless Channel Number of my computer's Wireless Adapter via Device Manager; which seems to have resolved the issue.

But other than that issue w/ the DD-WRT firmware and dropped connections (never had the issue before I flashed it w/ DD-WRT) I find the WRT54G to be a very solid Router. There is an updated version of the 54G...see here!

I have seen this too with dd-wrt, you just need to load a different release and it clears up. It's not just with the Linksys hardware. On the linksys hardware it's very picky when it comes to hardware release.
