    Okay.
    Sorry about that.
What operating system are you using? What printer are you using.

Apropos of networking printers, if you've a little spare cash in hand this season (ok, so maybe I'm a little over-optimistic :D), you might also try a network print server (wired and connected to one of the LAN ports on your router, or wireless). I use a Netgear WGPS606 and haven't had a lick of trouble with it for over a year now (other than it getting unplugged by my distinctly non-techie wife :D). That might be a viable solution as well as setting up printer sharing through your desktop. The benefit there is that the desktop won't have to be on for the laptop to be able to access the printer, as it would have to be under standard printer sharing.

Is the XP machine running Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3?

In that case, it would be best to upgrade that machine to SP3, which should permit the _Vista system to actually "see" the XP system; otherwise, if you stick with SP2, you'll have to download and install on the XP system a utility from Microsoft called the Link Layer Topology Discovery ("LLTD") Responder first.

The reason being that, because _Vista uses a different protocol for "seeing" the network it's attached to, it cannot "see" XP machines unless they have the ability to respond to the _Vista protocol - the LLTD responder gives the XP machine the ability to respond to the _Vista protocol.

Ok. When you you check network connections through _Vista, does it "see" the XP machine on the network?
