Are you using the correct type of cable. Usually this kind of connection requires a standard ethernet cable. If you're using a crossover cable it wont work. Or you may wish to try it the other way around, using a crossover instead of a standard cable if thats what you have already. What router do you have?

im using a standard cable, the thing is... it works with my desktop and used to work with the laptop!!! so i dont think the router/modem(provided by isp) or the cable is a problem,

is there any way i can test if my onboard lan is working??

as i mentioned earlier the green light which indicates a connection doesnt turn on

Look at the device manager and make sure the driver is loaded. If ok disable your firewall and see if it will connect. If not in there check the bios settings.

Most all modern routers are auto config, so any type (std or crossover) will work.

Make sure you are connecting to the lan ports and not the wan/internet port.

sounds like the 1396 connection is invoked.

Does the cable still work on the desktop, it may need to be replaced.

The chances of a cable going bad is pretty slim. Im assuming that since he uses a usb to LAN that it is a dsl or cable gateway. What I would do if all the drivers are working ok, and the NIC is enabled is to repair the connection in network connections. basically go to control panel>network connections>and right click in the connection your having an issue with and select repair. What this basically does is releases all connection information such as IP, gateway and subnet then searches for a dhcp server to obtain new connection information.

If this does not work then contact your ISP or network device manufacture for support.

to do a manual release renew open start>run> type "cmd"(no qutation marks)> when at the virtual dos prompt type "ipconfig /release loacal area connection" (no qutation marks) then "ipconfig /renew loacal area connection" (no qutation marks). This procedure does the exact same thing as right click and repair does in network connections.
