    hey guys

I have a D-Link DI-714P+ Enhanced 2.4Ghz router and have it currently connected wireless to 3 computers and by wire to another desktop. In the beginning with all the above connections, internet was fast and was good. However, within recent weeks internet has been slowing down to a halt. Sometimes, pages do not even load. It seems that this is temperamental as the internet is sometimes slow even with only one comp. on. Does anyone know what's going and or what I can do to diagnose the problem?

p.s. when it's slow, its not just internet, I play games like COD4 and the ping skyrockets to 8000. Also, limewire is extremely slow allowing me to squeeze only 9kb/s instead of the average 120kb/s. Also, upon reboot, it speeds up a bit but then slows down over time again.

    thanks,

Do you have cable or dsl? If it is cable then it might be your cable connection and congestion on your node. Since cable is a "shared" pipe speeds can vary dramtically at different times in the day depending on the traffic load. Have you tried rebooting the broadband modem?

i'll see if I can reboot the modem and I think I have cable. Also, my wifi is protected. I have it where a code is needed to use it and a key change.
    anything else i could do?

Cable is like a party line, the more users the slower it gets. It should clear up in a week when most go back to work. If Comcast they have been know to have large lag times. If you can get the QoS setup it will help on the local lags, when others are using it at the same time. I had them and switched over to FIOS, it is a lot faster than cable.

could the problem be with the router not able to give enough signal to each computer?

If you are getting a weak signal. you will drop down on speed. Interference by cordless phones and other appliance can knock you down. Adding a high gain antenna will help if you in a marginal coverage.

i don't think signal is the problem. Its right below me and is always excellent. Could it also be Kaspersky antivirus because of its web protection?

Well, DSL is like that normally. If you have someone using your wireless that would also effect it.
