i'm going to uni at University of Toronto come september and i was wondering

am i going to need a router or special cables to get hooked up?

i know it varries from uni to uni but i want to know what the norm is.

the building i'm staying at says it supplies a RESNET port.

is there other wireless hotspots or something around the campus that i can just turn on my wifi and use?

I'm pretty sure UofT has a campus wireless, you probrably need to get the login and password beforehand though

it's completely dependent on your school's LAN topology. one thing that is certain is that if they offer internet access (which i'm quite sure they do), is that you will NOT need a router or anything except your computer and an ethernet cable and/or a wifi card.

this is a question you should be asking your school, not a forum.

usually, they will discourage setting up your own router. They'll probably tell you that it could interfere with their network and what not, but we don't have wi fi in the dorm rooms, just in the lounges so i might be trying out a wireless network...
