well the vaio has a built in wifi or whatever, but I dont really get it, we have cable internet but its not amazing, so are there any USB cards you recommend

I need something that will work 99.9% of the time at fast speeds because I play online poker for money and wanna make sure I dont lose money to disconnects, but if you think the built in wifi is good enough (mostly stayin in town) but would like something that works traveling too

The wireless should be reliable as long as you are getting a good signal. This does require a wireless router that you have access to where ever you decide to play. In general, wireless cards do not have many issues. I believe sony will use an intel n card, so you are more than covered. If you use an ethernet cable you will be tethered, but will usually have a quicker more reliable connection, unless you can connect to a wireless N router.

Your post is a little hard to follow.

    1) You have a cable modem at home. Is that cable modem connected to a wifi access point or router with wifi at your home? If so, Wifi version G should be plenty fast.

    2) Unlocked Wifi connections to the Internet only exist at "hot spots". There isn't any single technology that you can buy that is going to allow you to connect to the Internet everywhere. You can purchase a card for your laptop that would allow you to connect to the Internet using cell phone service where it exists, but this can be costly and are not nearly as quick as a good wifi connection to the Internet.

Then you'd better go with a wired connection, because there is simply no way to guarantee that a wireless connection won't get dropped.

well and honestly I expect to be at a friends or at my desk most of the time, but when I travel to michigan or somewhere itd be nice to get something reliable

i could afford both or one if someone recommends it, but im not sure how many phone jacks ill be around
