First question, is there a 5GHz network in range, i'm assuming yes, but eh doesn't hurt to ask as some routers aren't simultaneous dual band, but can only transmit on one at a time.

Moving on, is your 5GHz network set to wireless N only, do you have other devices that can see the 5GHz network?

Does the router support 802.11a standard in the first place?

What is the router's make and model?

5GHz also doesn't make it as far as 2.4GHz, so maybe you're just out of range.

2915ABG is one lousy card and I'm being nice here. I've *never* managed to get any of them to work in the 5GHz range at proper "A" speed.

No, that's most definitely not the case. Antennae have absolutely nothing to do with your machine's ability to "see" the network.

Go under the card's properties or advanced settings in the Device Manager and try playing with the settings a bit. You might get lucky.

    Two years

OK - Intel 2915abg does not support 802.11n even if it's on 5GHz band. You have to set up your router 5GHz radio to "up to 54mbps" to make the router work as 802.11a.

ooooh, ordered one. much thanks, i was not aware of its existance :)

the laptop is an old Packard Bell Easynote. http://www.amazon.co.uk/PACKARD-EasyNote-MZ36-R-017-HardDrive-Radeon/dp/B003SDEMPU that would pretty much seem to be it. ram was instantly upgraded, hdd was too later. oh and it runs win7 now. (the laptop now just lives in the kitchen to run itunes and play podcasts.)

Wow, I haven't seen one of those connectors since 2005 when I had a Toshiba M40. I'm surprised they still make them.
