My Sony have Intel 4965 with a Wireless N router (D-Link DIR 655) and it shows up as 130 Mbps in Windows Wireless config.

Unless you are streaming something from media server, throwing lots of files across the server or have a NAS setup... I don't think its worth the upgrade.

If you plan to run around the house / apartment and you want maximum speed all around, then maybe a express card N card or PCMCIA N Card. I suggest getting D-Link DWA-652 if you want a PCMCIA version.

As for browsing / surfing speed, you wouldn't notice much of a difference. I suggest tweaking your browser and wireless connection for more speed. It is a much cheap and easier solution.

It's different case between DIR 655 vs. WT610N if they are to be paired with Intel 4965. DIR 655 is a single 2.4GHz band wireless N router, while WRT610N can do both 2.4 and 5 GHz band. And Intel 4965 can only use 40MHz wideband channel to get above 135 Mbps connection on the 5GHz band.

Thus in case of 4965 & WRT610N, probably the connection will be at 270Mbps max.

Compared with other brands, upgrading an HP or Thinkpad notebooks network card is not that easy, cause I've read that these two need specific version of Intel 5300/5350 card. So, you'll have to be sure that you don't get the general version of 5300/5350. Buy the specific HP version. There are a lot of these on ebay.

Don't know... If you have searched and bought the one that is said for HP, then you just have to trust the seller for sure.

Even if you upgrade your 4965 to 5300, you'll still get 270 Mbps. So... It's not worth the upgrade.

In order to get 3x streams 450Mbps of 5300 card, you'll have to wait for the latest wireless router which capable of doing so. I read somewhere (I think in SmallNetBuilder) that this kind of routers will soon enter the market.

    Like I said before.

Unless you are throwing huge files across the network, streaming 1080p movings from a media server or have NAS running with multiple computers connected transfer files, THERE is no point upgrading your Intel 4965.

You said you want "fastest speeds possible", ask yourself this question. What for?

Do you have T1 one? T10? Fiber? Are you watching and streaming HD movies from Netflix?

    Feel like I repeating myself.
