I hope you bought a Cat 5e cable, and not just a Cat 5 cable. Yes, you can put a switch on the end. As long as the total length stays under about 300ft you will be fine. If you have an old router laying around, you can disable DHCP, give it a static IP, turn off the security features, and use it as a hub, or you can buy a cheap 5 port switch and use it.

Any D-Link or Netgear switch will work. It doesn't sound like you need any switch management (direct where the data goes, security, etc), so you can buy a cheap unmanaged switch. I bought a eight port D-Link switch to take care of my entire house - under $50 at newegg.com. You can spend much less if you only need 4 ports. Stick with D-Link or Netgear, IMHO.

Kegobeer....why do you favor Dling and Netgear over Lynksys? Just curious :)

I've used D-Link more than Linksys and Netgear, and I like the D-Link products more. However, we use various Netgear managed and unmanaged switches at work and they tend to last a long time. If I want a Cisco product, I'll buy a Cisco product and not the Linksys home line.
