My hp pavilion dv6317 has lost the ability to see the wireless network card. Been working for 18 months so not a set up issue. new bios and drivers re-installed to no effect. Network function light on front remains orange. Modem working fine with two other computers. Have even set laptop back to factory settings and installed new card. Nothing. HP support useless. they recomend I send it to them to fix for a minimum of £250 english pounds. have seen other pavilion users with similar problems posted on various forums but whatever advice they got did not work for me. Can anybody help? Getting desperate!

When you say you "installed a new card" do you mean you opened the bugger up and physically swapped NICs? If so, did you swap like for like, or did you pick up a NIC that was different from the one the system originally came with?

I did open up the bugger and installed a card with same product number as the original. Though I now have doubts if there was anything wrong with the old one anyway, as all symptoms are the same for both.

Sounds like some very reasonable doubts. Any chance there was a problem with the antenna leads or the power supply line(s) to the NIC?

What about checking around the socket that it plugs into to see if there's been any damage to the connection between motherboard and socket - e.g., see if anything around there looks like it burned itself, or swelled up, or whatnot?

EDIT: Also, what about resetting the CMOS? It's possible that between changing the NIC and changing the BIOS, the NIC got taken out of the configuration that's saved in the NVRAM. If that's the case, then resetting the CMOS should allow the NIC to be properly discovered during POST.
